Think about your workout routine, what does it look like? Is it something that is organized and scheduled or haphazard and rarely happens? Mine is the latter.
I was in such a great place last Summer and Fall and my routine was, well, routine. Then Winter and the holidays happened and I got off track. And now I am having a very hard time getting back into the groove.
Why is it so hard to start a new routine? After I work out I always feel amazing; and who doesn’t want to feel amazing?!
I realized that I need more than just a pep talk. This will take an intervention. So, I sat down and brainstormed ideas to make working out feel amazing.
7 Easy Ways to Make Your Workout Feel Amazing
Bring a friend. If at all possible, get a friend to join you as a partner in crime. This will make it more fun for both of you and also give you an accountability partner. So, get a friend to join the health club with you, sign up for a yoga class or agree to take walks in the evening. Whatever you decide together to do. There is strength in numbers.
Pump up the music. This is a great time for you to put the playlist to work and pump it up for some motivation. You could listen to your favorite group or make a special exercise playlist. Another idea is to listen to a book you love. Just make it fun!
Exercise in the morning. That’s right, you should exercise in the morning if you can. Studies show that morning exercisers are more consistent. But you need to select a time that is easy for you (and your partner). The key is to find a time that’s right and that will work with your lifestyle.
Have the right mindset. Go into this with the mindset of having fun! Also, go you for getting back into a routine! I like to say, “Progress Not Perfection”. As long as you are doing better today than you did yesterday, it is a win. Don’t beat yourself up if you skip a class here or there.
Reward yourself. Set a small goal and when you complete it reward yourself. This could be as simple as running an extra 20 minutes on the treadmill and you g
ive yourself a 20-minute hot sauna. Or maybe your work out 3 times a week for a month and reward yourself with an hour long massage. Whatever it is, just set a goal and reward yourself when you complete it.
Invest in you. Make sure that you have the proper shoes, clothes, etc. for your workout routine. It’s a little investment, sure, but it can make all the difference. For example, you might need a yoga mat for classes. Also, there are so many great gadgets, pedometers and apps. But hey, you are worth it!
Interval training. Interval training is great and a lot of gyms offer it. It’s a nice way to keep things new and fresh. Another idea is to just switch up your workout. If you typically use the treadmill, then switch to a stair climber. Or maybe add a weekly Yoga Class to your routine. Just try something new so that you – and your muscles – don’t get bored.
Just Do It.
I’m sure you’ve seen the famous quote by Nike, “Just do it”.
When it comes to starting any exercise routine it’s actually really simple; you either do it or you don’t. Sometimes you need a little help from a friend to get started. And that is okay; the key is to start.
I am certain that if you put the effort into trying a few of these easy tricks, you will be well on your way to feeling amazing. Just do it.
