I’m fascinated and obsessed with Drop Cloths. Every time I go to the home improvement store, I pick one up. Okay, at least one and sometimes two. They are a yummy color, durable and cheap. I have a whole Pinterest Board dedicated to them ~ here. They are also very easy to cut and sew; and I am just a beginner level seamstress.
Out of necessity, I decided to make up some dish towels. Mine seem to keep disappearing and I really hate buying them since I’m not a fan of ducks or little dancing vegetables as the decor for my kitchen.
Drop Cloth Dish Towels ~ Tutorial
First, wash and dry your drop cloth. I also did used fabric softener since I wanted the towels to be soft. The fabric is still a little stiff but I know that it softens a little more with each wash. I then ironed the drop cloth on the highest setting. I wanted a nice flat surface to paint on.
I took an old kitchen towel that I had and liked the size of and used it for a pattern. I cut up my drop cloth into pieces that size to be hemmed. I used my sewing machine and just did a simple rolled hem with a straight stitch I was careful to go back over each corner to make sure it was tight and would lay flat.
Once they were all hemmed, I trimmed some painters tape so I could make different sized Grain Sack Stripe on some of them. I just used my mat and rotary cutter to do this.
Then I positioned my tape where I wanted it on the drop cloth to make the Grain Sack Strips. Be sure to press the tape firmly down onto the drop cloth; you don’t want paint seeping under the tape.
I used a flat paint brush and white paint.
I filed in the stripes; careful to make sure I had a nice line along the edge.
I let this set for about 5-10 minutes to start to dry; then I removed the tape.
For the stenciled Flue de’ lis, I used painters tape to secure the stencil. I used white paint again with a stencil brush ~ dabbing the paint on and careful not to let paint seep under the stencil. (Follow the directions on your stencil packet.)
I removed the tape and stencil right away and washed it (per the stencil packet instruction).
I set the Dish Towels aside to dry ~ for about an hour.
You are finished!
These were super easy and fun to make. I think they are perfect as a Wedding, Christmas or Birthday Gift! They are shabby chic and you can really paint them any color or pattern you like. Also, drop cloths are super absorbent! They are designed to absorb paint, after all. I just finished these yesterday and I’m already using them.
